Default AHH! what have i done!!

I hope someone can help me on this one..
ok so its been 3000...enough milage for an oil change...so i unload the old stuff (which was quite a hassle by the way) i start it up again with no oil for 5-10 SECONDS just to make sure everything was flushed...and some bad baddd stuff started to happen..
after i put the new mobil 1 syn in, im letting it idle for 3 minutes to make sure everything's cool when i start seeing a whollllllle buncha smoke from under the hood...i open it up and find its just a fair bit of oil on the headers...then i hear this grind comming from inside my engine that wasnt there before...i take it out for a drive arround the block to see whats up and the noise just gets worse..when i open up the hood and listen very carefully it sounds like its comming from the top end...possibly the valvetrain...
so i guess my question is...how much damage can be done by running the car without ANY oil for like 10 seconds...and does anybody know what the grinding could be>? *(lol i know stupid questionasking what a noise is...)

1) Never run your motor without oil, even for just a few seconds.

2) It takes 5 quarts

Definately you hurt something in the valvetrain.

Who told you to start the engine to flush the oil???

It starts up fine, runs well, but when i get on it...well yea...

Yea that is most likely the worst thing you can do to a car. If your car runs fine after that i will be amazed. That really is soooo bad for your car. No clue on the damage, i just know that is pretty stupid to do to your car because your car uses oil for everything. I dont know bout the damage or what you can do to fix it, but goodluck on that.

P.S. Im sayin that is stupid thing to do in general, not saying you are stupid.

The oil pump was probably the first thing to go.

well...this may have all been a false alarm...
Apparently this car is the only one I've ever seen that has TWO drainplugs, one in front, one in the back that aparently has the major reserve...i only removed the front plug, which would explain why i only got a quart or two max. out of it...i took out the rear today and of course almost all five quarts drain out...
one question though, I don't know whether or not it had synthetic in it or not, but i bought 5 quarts of mobil 1 syn. 5w-30...does it matter if you mix a bit of regular, with maybe 4 quarts of synthetic? what about the weight? I had no way of telling what was in there previously, so I went with the 5w-30...

You may be stuck with a nasty valve train sound for along time. My car dumped 1/2 its oil out before i got to the track one night without me knowing it and by the end of the 1/4 i heard tapping. Couldnt place the sound till 4 runs later when i figured it was my engine short on oil.

Thx for the warning twister...thats kinda what i thought...but if you were using "dino" oil and wanted to switch to syn how would you do that without having the slightest bit mix?

I've never heard you can't mix syn with dyno oil ( I don't mean to be argumentative Twist).

Now, I have heard that oil experts advise against mixing types and brands. Each type of oil has a certain additive package which is meant to work a certain way, and it will be less effective if diluted with something else. Each different viscosity of motor oil has a balance of viscosity improvers that determine its viscosity rate and how well it will protect your engine. Upset that balance and you will upset the viscosity, though not eliminating the viscosity to a detrimental point.

Here's a quote from AMSOIL:
"Mixing AMSOIL and petroleum is not recommended (having petroleum motor oil mixed in detracts from the superior performance of AMSOIL), but there is no danger in doing so. Those who have been using petroleum motor oil in their mechanically sound vehicles can switch to AMSOIL safely. Petroleum motor oil and AMSOIL Synthetic Motor Oil are only incomparable in the way they perform, not incompatible."

7UP is right, mixing the two types will not do anything harmful to the engine. It is impossible to switch between the two types without a mix unless you disassemble the engine and clean it thoroughly.
