Default O/D light blinking....Please help!

OK, when I was driving home with my mom's car (its a 94 V6, all stock) the overdrive light kept coming on then back off. And it blinked the entire way home so I said to myself I'm gonna check it out when I get home. So I pull in and shut off the engine and then I start it back up and the blinking was gone??? I don't think it's going to be a problem cause the car ride was not attected at all, just wondering if anyone knew the cause of this?

Also this has happened on every time I drive it and it's really annoying.

Can anyone please help me?

Thanks again guys.

Might be the OD button has some dust in it making the OD go on-off.

OK, Ill try that. Do I just wipe the dust around it, or is there a way I can remove the button and clean underneath?

Thanks again.

Yea, just get in there with anything wipe it off etc. maybe your mom spilled coffee or soda or something on it, so it is sticking and releasing and the engine cant decide what to do. To clean the dust out, get one of those keyboard cleaners and spray that in there, or to clean it, try anything that is slim, pipe cleaner etc. and you may be able to put a piece of paper towel or something in there to get the crap out that is causing the light to blink.

Oh forgot to add. Heres a weird part. It keeps blinkning whenever I go past a certain speed like 50 or 60 aroud there but in residential zone I didn't see it start blinking at all. And the first time this happened I was just driving normally and then all of a sudden it started to blink on and off. But I'll try to clean it out.

Any other suggestions you guys can think of? And thanks for the cleaning suggestion already guys.

THe light is blinking because there is a problem with the trans.. Most likely the TCC solenoid is acting up ,which is why you only see the light over 50 or so-afterthe TCC is engaged. Get the codes scanned and let us know

Just out of curiosity - where is the tach at a steady 50 60 or 70? My '99 V6 Auto is right at about 2K rpm at 70. It may be that the OD relay - or whatever it is that makes OD work- is shot and never getting into OD.

What happens at idle when you push the OD button to turn OD off?
What happens at steady 40 mph (OD off) when you push the button to go into OD?

Checked the tranny fluid level? Tranny filter been changed?

Never really checked out how it reacts at certain speeds but I'll give it a try.

I'll check the fluids and not too sure about the filter. If I need one, how much do they cost and how hard for the install?

I'll give these steps a try and let you know.

Thanks again.

you need to have it checked, I had a Ranger that did that, it was weird, they said it was a speed sensor or something. Wasnt too expensive. I think you need to visit a Ford dealer and get it checked out.
