Default Tune-up

Hey all, I'm new to this forum and I just got this site from stangnet.com.
well let me say I'm about to purchase a 95GT 5spd with cat-back flow masters, K&N filter and 180* stat......pretty much stock!

I'm going to add 373 gears and a mac 2.50 H pipe.

I wanna do a tune-up but I don't know what brand names are good, any suguestions?

Plugs
wires
cap&rotor
pcv
fuel filter

54000 miles on the car and it has beeen running on regular 10w 40 all its life, should I upgrade to sytitic oil?

I would use mostly Motorcraft (Ford) stuff for tune-up products. For wires you can either go with Ford Racing 9mm wires, or like I'm running, MSD 8.5 mm's. You could also go with MSD on the cap and rotor.

I havn't ran synthetic before, but I know there are a few other moderators that have, so I'll hand that over to them.

Get all from FORD.

You can upgrade to Synthetic oil, no problem.
Mobil1 or Castrol 5w40, use motorcraft or purolator filters, no FRAMS they suck.

Rob, I second that as well. I have been using Ford's tuneup products for years simply because they are high quality and are more than adequate for stock to mildly modified Mustangs. Spending more does not always equate to better performance. I think this is a case in point. Unless you setup requires more then stck with Ford OEM.

use synthtic oil. its more expensive but proven way better. mobil is good , argueably the best. castrol is pretty good stuff too. and i third what the moderators said, use ford parts, motorcraft plugs, motorcraft oil filter, ford racing brass cap and rotor. ford 9mm wire. fuel filter just go to autozone and get one, its pretty much the same. and for the gears, i've heard 3.55 are a better match for manual's if your a daily driver. but opinions vary. your call.

Here's my .02cents
Like everyone said use the Ford stuff. I notice when I work on different types of cars that the OEM stuff is really better. It was engineered for that application and it works. Stay away from "white box parts" there cheap for a reason.
I stick with Motorcraft plugs and wires, a K+N filter, Mobil synthetic in the engine, synthetic in the trans and rear end.
I don't beleive in additives, they dont do any good or bad, just leaves your wallet a little lighter ie Slick 50 etc....

Yep, Ford parts aren't always the best in other area's, but you just can't get any better for Tune-up parts. Go with Ford on that.

I am a HUGE Mobil 1 synthetic fan. Been using it for years. And I have torn engines apart, both and without M1, and there is a wear difference. the gain of a couple extra pony's dosen't hurt either. Redline has a good reputation, but I haven't used it.

BTW gixxerjoe, Welcome to the AFM boards!

I run Mobil 1 synthetics in both my stangs, from end to end. A few years ago I spent a fair amount of time researching oil and filters. While the information was not always clear and specific, one thing did stand out. Mobil 1 synthetics always placed in the top three rated engine oils. With regard to filters, I use Ford OEM. According what I could tell from my research, Ford filters are of very high quality and one hell of a filter. Only Mobil 1 and Purolators Top Branded filter outplaced it. One other very important thing I learned... stay the hell away from Fram. The tests, ratings, comments and complaints were scary. No doubt from what I read that FRAM was the bottom of the barrel and I would'nt use one of their regular filters if they were given to me with $50 bills strapped to the side.

In short:

Fluids - Mobil 1 synthetic

Oil Filter - Ford, Mobil 1, Purolator (top of the line) with Ford first because of its a great value for the price and its a great filter.

It seems like we have a winner!!!!

FORD MOTORCRAFT for tune-up parts
and MOBIL 1 synthetic oil for the engine!

Now where can I buy the Motorcraft parts.....besides at ford, cause they probably charge me double at a dealer.....I know the oil can be found almost everywhere.

Thanks all,

Joe

MY vote falls with the Ford stuff as well, as a matter of fact, I believe that the complete tune up kit was available through FMS including the wires, plugs, fuel filter, pcv, cap and rotor. I have used some of the other brands over the years, but the best is Ford. I havMobile 1 in my car now as well except Castrol in my T5 and rear end. I have noticed that 4th gear grinds a little at the track since I installed synthetic in the box. I have been told that the scynronizers do not function properly using synthetic, I do not know whether this is true or not.
