Ford Y-Block, made from 1954-1964, most commonly found in 55-57 T-Birds. It was the first OHV motor to replace the Flathead. It's the only rear distributor V8 Ford has ever made.
I have a friend who is old school on fords. He hates computers. I was telling him about this site. He says that if those guys are so smart they should know which ford mortor had a rear distribtor. I cant wait to call him. I forgot to metion we bet 20 bucks that I couldnt find out.
Thanks to Wilit I,m going to get that 20.
I have been a member here for a year or so. And the info that I get for my 94gt has been priceless.
I feel very lucky to find so many smart people who are willing to share info.
The MEL engines (which stood for Mercury Engine Line) was Mercury and Lincoln's big blocks, as opposed to Ford's big blocks, the FE (Ford Engine). The MEL came in 383, 410, 430, and 432 cubic inch displacements. The 430 MEL was used in the Lincoln Contential Mk I and Mk II, and was the only engine produced by Ford motor company at the time to be dyno tested before it was installed in the car.
Sweet! When my buddy's dad was 18, he bought a '57 Ranchero with a 312, but the thing sucked, so he put a 390 in it. Y-blocks are pretty cool for the nostalgia factor, but as far as performance goes, they're not that great.
wanna bet? there are many old tricks to make a Y-Block scream, there is now a new aftermarket intake and a billit distributor for the Y-block that have been designed in the last 2 years!
