Default Break-in period for new car; first oil change

OK techies...what is the recommended break-in period for a car and what are the guidlines for this? (I just bought an 04' Mach 1 and can't find this info anywhere!)

Also, I've heard about people changing their oil after the first 1,000 miles to remove the small metal shavings accumulated from a new engine. What's the technical opinion on this?

Thanks guys...
Grim

Why don't you just ask the dealer that sold you the car? They would probably know.

I work at a Jiffy Lube and I don't really know what the word on this is. I once told a customer that you should do your first oil change around 1k to 2k miles due to the metal shavings and my district manager happened to be around and told me not to tell a customer that ever again. lol.

Anyways most people do their first oil change at 5k miles. But I wouldn't go more than 2k on break-in oil. On a new engine the clearances are tight and there WILL be metal shavings from everything that gets broken in.

1st oil changes and recommended intervals are described in you maintance schedule. There shouldn 't be any metal shavings in an engine when it is new or else it will never make it to the first oil change. That is an old myth that someone started along time ago. Or a very sloppy engine rebuilder.

Thanks for the input, guys.

anglia_stang, I took your advice and called the dealer. They said that "technically" cars these days don't have break-in periods. However, he recommended waiting until I put over 1,000 miles on it before I start to get-on-it.

this is correct. just take it easy for 1000 miles, get the oil changed and then let 'er rip!

Todays engines have a much closer tollerance than engines in the past.
