Default Engine swaps & Emmissions Standards

Hey everyone,

I have been reading lots of threads about engine swaps. One issue that is barely addressed is the compliance with emmisions standards. i understand that non-compliance with emmissions may lead to a heavy fine. If anyone would like to join me in researching this important topic, please add to this thread.

Questions I would like answered:

Can we swap from a V-6 to V-8 as long as we have all emmisions components for engine of that year?

Do we have to inform vehicle registration and insurance of the swap?

etc.....

Please feel free to add any questions comments or info.

thanks guys, keep up the good work!

Mike

you can legally swap out any engine that was factory for that car (can't swap a 351 into a 99, Saleen is considered a factory). It will require all of the factory smog equipment

Well,

In Calif. you can swap out to any other engine as long as it is the same year or newer with all the smog equipment for that engine. You would have to take it to a Referee Station to be inspected. Then a tag, with what engine and year, is placed on the drivers "B" piller

I've done this three times.

Hey guys,

I have a little more info for my end...I live in Illinois. From what I have read, whatever engine is put in the car has to conform to the same emmissions for the same chassis type and model year of the automobile installed in.

here is the link:
http://www.epa.state.il.us/air/vim/g...#modifications

So would it be safe to assume that the Cobra, GT, and V6 all have to conform to the emmissions specs of the mustang chassis, not neccessarily the powerplant? In other words the emmissions criteria for the GT and Cobra are the same as the V-6?

If anyone would like to add to or disprove my reasoning please do, we are all trying to understand the twisted logic of government documents...

Don't tell them! From the outside they wouldn't know the difference

It's the same block so it is the same engine and there is no need to tell them.

in PA you can get an emissions exempt sticker if you keep the car under 5000 miles per year.

Okay got a 95 302 5.0. I live in California. If I wanted to do a 351 5.0 swap, would it be legal, of course with all the smog equipment hooked up. Oh and where could I get this all done? Anybody know what would be the easiest route?
