Default gas milage meets performance????? what engine?

ok im looking into a project mustang, just looking for a body for now, i was gonna put a big block 400 in it, well i dont think itd do anywhere near good when it came to my gas millage. so heres the question. what engine/s should i consider, i want atleast some decent gas milage, how can i mod it if my wallet goes into the tank? lol. but i want perfromance, im used to my saturn getting 21 MPG, im not looking for exactly that cuz im sure i wont get it, but ive been considering alot of diffrent engines, but dont know anything on how theyd average on MPG, and if its only gonna get me good gas milage if i drive slow, then forget it, lol its not gonna happen.

Performance and MPG are not exaclty "compatible"... for every HP increase theres an added need for more fuel, it is that simple.

BUT, there are ways to get both, one is CHIP TUNNING, you can get chips with DUAL programs, one for MPG another for performance.

There are others which will improve efficiency of the engine, such as having a blueprinted - balanced engine with lightweight internals. This reduces the MASS that has to be rotated.
Loosing weight is another good way to improve mileage, the less mass you need to move the less HP it takes to accelerate it.

Heck, my wife's Grand Marquis averages that!

The dual chip option combined with a power adder and a mild performance motor should get to your goal.

I get around 17-20 mpg with my 5.0, I can expect to get even more when I add my 3.73s and UD pullies. Not much but every little bit helps. and try not driving like a f*ing maniac all the time. Thats a good way to save some gas. And when i say 3.73s saving gas I mean that I won't have to give it as much gas to go the same distance than with the stock gears. I baby my car

hmm i love that 4.6 DOHC idea, thats nice, is that what the 2000 cobras come stock with? i might have to look into a wrecked one if thats the case. i dont really care what motor i decide in the end, as long as its faster than a 94 5.0, then im happy

well 3.73's will not help you gas milage since it runs higher rpm's its also harder on your engine because of the same thing.

and yes a 4.6 DOHC is what has come out in all the cobras since 1996.

LS1's get extremely good gas mileage for their size. I've seen some average 25 mpg. Thats better than my 6.

Well,

To answer the original question, the good old fuel injected 5.0. In stock form in a Mustang they get upwards into 23 mpg or better. With some pretty good mods, and that means match parts, you could get gas milage and performance.

My son's 90, which is "all natural", has around 300fwhp and gets 21-22mpg. My 91, when it was running, got the best of 27mpg and it had 340rwhp with turbo.

Of course if you are always in the throttle, it's going to suck the fuel down!

There are no '00 Cobras.

Anyone who says differently doesn't know what they're talking about.

That's what the '96-'98 Cobras get.

My bone-stock '95 GT (read 5.0) gets about 28mpg during the summer months.
