Question Funny noise

Hey guys, I need a little help here. I have a noise that sounds like metal on metal, but I'm not sure what it is or where it's from. I have a 95 GT and it only happens in 1st and 2nd gear going forward, never reverse. The noise doesn't happen all the time. I've had a friend listen and he said it's definatley coming from the back of the car. I'm raised it up and looked all over, checked the brakes and everything with no luck. The only thing I could find was a slight rubbing nosie from the driveshaft. I can't see where anything is rubbing against it and the u-joints are fine. I put a rag around the driveshaft and pulled down while my friend rotated the tires and the nose went away. They only thing I haven't check yet was the play in the pinion bearing. How much movement should I have?

Anybody else have any more ideas? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Noises are sometimes very hard to diagnose. It's good to have a buddy though to listen with you while you drive.
Does the noise happen between shifts of 1st and 2nd or while your driving in 1st and 2nd? If it's in between shifts it could be exhaust related. Other possiblities are rust build up on the edges of the brake rotors and rubbing on the brake caliper anti-rattle clips.
Sometimes driving up against a building can determine which side it is on also. Good luck to ya!

there shouldnt be any noticeable up or down movement on a bearing... especially pinnion/yoke. the angle should come from the u-joints.. have you checked them?

I've checked the u-joints, they're fine. The noise happens while driving in 1st and 2nd gear. I've tried driving along side a building/barrier and it doesn't seem to be any louder either side. I'll look into the rust on the brake rotors.

Thanks
