Default Posi Counterbalance???

There is a doo-dad hang from the bottom of my differential that gets in the way of checking the diff lube. The guy at the quick-oil-change place said that it was some kind of counter balance for the positraction.
My Chilton's repair manual just manages to show this in one picture in the section about removing/installing the rear axle. But there is no mention of it or its function.
Does anybody know for sure what this is and how it works?
Thanks,
Jeff

I forgot to mention this is a '95 GT. I haven't actually checked my numbers yet to see if I have posi.

i have one on the 7.5 trac lock rearend from my 83 gt.i would be lead to believe its a counter weight to keep the pinion from turning way too far up during hard launches and snapping a u-joint,but im not really for sure...

Pretty sure your talking about the vibration dampener . If it has a thing that looks like a dog bone , then its the dampener . Leave it on

Yes, it looks like a dogbone. Can I remove it for checking the diff lube, or am I going to need new bushings or something when I re-mount it?

Yeah , you can take it off . Just put it back on . The only problem I would think you may run into is getting the bolts loose . Just hit em with a shot of wd40 first
