Default Need help with Gauges on 65 mustang

I am working on my first restore project. It's a 65 coupe that has been changed from a 6 to a 289 v8. I believe that it had a generator but now it's fit with an alternator. All the gauges peg out when I turn on the key. It may be a simple fix, but not sure where to start. Thanks for any help: help:

Sounds like a voltage regulator problem to me . I would check into that first .

Thanks, I checked the voltage at the gauges, and am getting 11 volts. Is this the right voltage? If not what should it be?

No , the voltage regulator is bad in your car . Go to the auto parts store and tell them you need a new voltage regulator . You said you updated the alternator , and some alternators have built in voltage regulators , so youll need to find out if it's external or in the alternator .

Changed both the regulator and the alternator. Still not working right. I'm getting 13 volts now instead of 11 volts. Any ideas? Thanks

your instrument panel voltage regulator is bad. its mounted on the back of the panel. your guages work on 6 volts. the regulator steps it down from 12.
