Question Need to know info on EGR valves.

I need to know everything there is to know on EGR for my stang. Is the EGR suposed to pull vacum at idle? I hooked up the vacum guage to it and got nothing. The car was warm too. What are some simptoms of a bad EGR?

An egr valve is operated by vacuum, it doesn't make any. When the throttle is closed, the egr opens and recycles the unburnt exhaust gases through the intake. Under full throttle, the egr doesn't work. A bad egr can cause idle problems, running rough, low power.

The EGR solenoid turns the vacuum on and off for the valve. There should be no vacuum at an idle. EGR works during cruise mode when the engine is warm. It does'nt work at wide open throttle or and idle. Jarrett is right it can cause stalling and drivability problems

Most times if at an idle, you tap on the diaphragm, (round metal part) with a screwdriver or wrench, it will knock some carbon loose and clear up.. just an old test.

So it would cause idle problems and stalling. If it didn't open what would the computer do. I have a problem at idle. It will lop like a cam and somwtimes it will not start, it will start but will stall imediatly. When driving the idle air by-pass valve open and you can hear a wistle. The car will start to hesitate then buck violently. Now at the present time it will not go. The car starts but once you try to give it throttle to take off it just stalls. It will free rev alittle but will not how the proper rpm. I can race it to 4k but it will go from 3,500k to 4k to 4,300k and then when you let off for it to idle it just stalls. I will not get me to work so now I'm screwed. I just spent 120 dollar at NAPA for a new MAP sensor and the electical connection that goes on the back of the EGR needless to say the $120 didn't do anything and electrical part are none returnable. I need much !!! Have to get to work and make money for my Stang.

If the EGR goes, It usually throws a code. Try resetting the computer and if it doesnt re-learn, check codes.
The EGR valve "acts like a monster vacum leak" it can throw off idleing badly.
check out this article...

Its always a good idea to change it if its that old.. but make sure its that first.
Did the problem just start?
