Question Just a few questions...

Hey yall, I'm only 15, but seriously thinking about building cars and stuff for a living and I have a few questions about car engines and stuff. If any of these questions sound stupid, don't tell me that because the probably do, but I'm not an expert...yet. LOL

1. What's a stroker engine?
2. What does the HO stand for on my dad's '89 5.0L V8?
3. What's the difference between and small and big block engines?

I have a lot more questions, but I just can't think of any more right now.

**starts poking people** C'mon guys, I know someone here can answer the kids questions. I'd do it myself but my brains as blank as the term papers I'm supposed to be writing. (if you want proof just ask how many times i had to use the backspace key to type that first sentence.....)

increasing the stroke of the crankshaft to get more cubic inches... a 347 is a stroked 302

This is hard to define, basically the size of the block... big blocks are bigger than small blocks.. of course, pontiacs are all big blocks.. even the 350... go figure..

Smile Thanks.

Hey, thanks for the answers. The first question I had no idea about and was wondering about that. The second one, I probably coulda figured out if I would have thought about it for a minute and the third, I was just wondering if there was a technical definition to explain it.

Dark Knight did a good job with answering your questions but I'll add a bit to it. Engine displacement is a function of the bore size of the cylinders and the stroke of the crankshaft. A stroker has the crankshaft stroke increased thereby increasing displacement. As you are on a Mustang website, I'll use Ford examples: a BIG block is a 429/460 or a 390/427 FE motor. Small blocks are 289/302, etc.

BTW, the only stupid question is the ones you DON'T ask!
