I just picked up my fist pony about a month ago and Im having a few probs that i cant seem to fig out. Anyways my 86 5.0 gt is running real rich. Ive tried everything. So far ive done a tune up, checked the timing, (12 deg) checked the tps and changed the fuel regulator. Nothing Ive done has changed how it runs. Also its real sluggish off of the line. Any ideas would be real helpfull. This car has lived a hard life and I would like to see if theres any hope for her after all. Any ways thnx for any and all you help.....Rob
check your o2 sensors. that could very well be the problem. i had the same problem and it was my o2's. you can pick up a pair for under $40.

Import Driver---Twas last friday night and caught at the light, Was a domestic V8 and no cops in sight, I will try, I will try, I will try with this small motor, To beat this damn Mustang, even with its juiced motor, As the light goes green and I pull like no joke, The Mustang erupts in clouds of tire smoke, Now Smasher, now Rev-ver, now Stroker, now Blitzin, These are the names of my four VTEC pistons, Racing ahead I'm the star of the action, But I know I'm in trouble when V8 gets traction, Grabbing second, I hear the RPM's sing, My mirror is blocked by my shopping kart wing, I now hear the roar of the big monster gaining, All I can do is keep my four-banger straining, In a second, the shock wave hits with a blast, And my stickers go flying now a thing of the past, Don't bother with third, cause now it's too late,
Just try to act cool, like you can even relate, Looking up at the taillights as they get smaller, The driver backs off just to give me a holler, "You can't win them all," he says in fling, "You may not win any, in that silly thing," I smiled and revved as he pulled out of sight, With my new mods tomorrow…it will be a better night.
I recommend you cleaning your Mass Air Flow sensor. It's in your induction path between your filter and throttle body. There are two small wires that get buildup on them, especially if you are using an aftermarket filter that you have to oil.
This can cause a rich or lean condition because it throws off the flow sensed. I cleaned mine with a fuel injection system intake cleaner I picked up at Autozone. Seriously improved my performance immediately and made my check engine light codes go away.
Thanks alot for the replies guys, I took your advise and pulled the codes out of the puter and I may be having a prob with the egr. Im also getting codes from each of the o2 sensors on a rich condition. But my wife and my co detector in my living room already told me that it was running rich. (I had it pulled out of the garage with the door pulled down) I have a good buddy who owns a auto repair shop that doesnt have the time to look at my car. And the weather is getting warmer and im gettin anxious to take her out for a ride. I took this car and a 71 ford pick up in a trade for a 88 ford motor home that i just didnt need anymore so i took the trade and Im lookiing to unload the pickup and take that money and spend it on my pony. Anyway back to my probs: This car has an aod tranny and there is a electrical plug rite next to where the spedo cable connects to the tranny. Well needless to say the plug ig gone and i found where i belive it is supposed to be and the plug is ripped off of the wires. Any idea what this plug is supped to be for? The one thing i can tell you is the tranny does shift through the gears really quickly. I dont know if this has anything to do with it. I do know its not the neutral safty or the back up light switch. Again I ask any ideas? If needed i could take a pic of it, if that would help.
And has anybody ever here used the b&m shifter on the aod tranny. I had a few prob mateing the shifter up to the cable and sombody boogered up where the shifter cable bolts to the tranny and im not sure if what i did will work. Anybody out here had to cross these bridges??? Once again thnx alot....Rob
