Hey guys, im ready to build my first 302 for my project car. Since this will be my first engine build i was wondering if you guys could direct me to a book or a website that will take me through the steps of the buildup. I think i have a good combo that will get me about 350hp/350tq at the flywheel NA. (i want this car to be just a summer car, not a daily driver) After that ill probably end up doing a small dry shot of nitrous. I decided to go with a 302 instaed of a 351 because of gas mileage and because i want an EFI system. What kinda power are you guys making through a 302/306 NA and what are your combos.
p.s. i do have a budget to be under
anyways. so a book or website that could help. thanks
i would suggest getting a pakage so you know that the parts will work well together. i personally enjoy the edelbrock pakages....they are a good company. i would call them up and see what they can give you that will meet your power depends. i would go for the performer pakage and use 24# injectors, a good 2 1/2" exhaust with 1 5/8" primaries on the headers, a 70mm throttle body, a 73mm air meter, a K&N filter, afpr, 190 fuel pump.

Thanks a lot guys, those books look really good. See the reason i want a step by step guide is becaues im afraid i might do the little things wrong. Thats why i was thinking of buying an already built short block. I definatly want forged pistons and a strong crank because of the nitrous i plan on using. I saw a professionally build shortblock in a local newspaper for sale with ARP girdle, prepped with X-cam for $1500 Canadian, but it was slightly used which is what i was afraid of. Here is the combo that i though would work.
306 - forged pistons
x 303 camshaft, hardened pushrods, 1.6 RR (dont know if theyll work with the x cam)
Either edelbrock performer or Ported GT 40 (still not sure which heads)
Ported Cobra upper and lower
24 lbs injectors
73mm MAF
70 mm TB
255LPH
100/150 shot of nitrous (already have the kit, stage 2 NOS)
i plan on buying things like injectors, intakes and possibly heads used because of my budget (im only 20 ) but this project will occur over a period of time so im in no rush.
P.S. in a recent MM&FF, they had a feature on a guy who went 11.2 on a 306 with JE pistons, ported stock heads, x cam and ported upper and lower with a 150 shot wet system.
any input would be appreciated. ps. need more help on HEAD CAM INTAKE choice/proven combos. thanks again.
im gonna wuss out and answer the easy question... a long block is everything including heads.. short block sold is usually crank, cam, everything assembled except for water pump, valve covers, heads, manifolds, etc.
the ported cobra intake sounds good, and so do the edelbrock performer heads. the x cam would probably give you good results but if you really wanted to be quick i would call up some cam companies and get a cam that is designed for the flow characteristics of your heads and the intake. youll probably get better results this way, but that doesnt mean that youll get bad results by going with the x303 cam.
depending on the shot of nitrous you finally decide on, you may need to go to 30# injectors, im not real sure about this but you might want to check up on this further.
im 20 too, so i know how hard it is to get enough money to put into your car, but buying that stuff online shouldnt be any problem. but the only thing i would watch out for on the heads is that they may be warped and need rebuilt and you really cant tell when buying them online. if the seller says they are fine, most likely they are but i always have apprehensions about buying used parts online because i have already had some bad experiences when doing this.
one other thing, dont forget that it takes more than hp to have a fast car, youll still need things like boxed control arms and good tires, a tranny that can handle the punishment, the right gears and converter(if you have an auto car), a good clutch if its a five speed, etc.
