Default Help. My gauges are possesed

My '99 35th edition Mustang had the battery light come on & the mechanic checked & said the alternator need replaced. The day after replacing the alternator the gauges are bouncing all over the place! They started to flexuate at 3000 RPM's. Had the battery checked & it is ok. Any ideas what the problem is?
I'd appreciate any help. Thanks.

twice ive had bad alternator experiences. both times were on the highway, and first the radio cuts out, thethe guage lights dim, then i get off at the nearest exit and the car stalls and shuts off. that was when the alternator died though. never had that happen AFTER a new one. so my guess is they installed it wrong. might wanna go back and get some explainin done.

i have a 01 merc. villager van that has a similar problem. The speedometer intermittantly cuts out and caused the engine to surge and buck.....

Try taking the gauge cluster out of the dash. On the back of the assembly, there should be a circuit board that slides into the back. Take it out and check to see if anything looks burnt out.
On my 94 gt a short caused all the gauges to go crazy. About 3 months latter I took the circuit bourd out (Just because I wanted to see what it was). Reinstalled it and everything was back to normal. Maybe it'll work on yours too.

Take it back to the mechanic. Insist that the problem did not exist before he did his work. If he is up-standing, he will investigate and recommend a course of action. It is very possible he overlooked something, didn't realize another problem existed, or (not likely) caused another glitch. Alternator replacement is NOT rocket science, however alternators can be defective out of the box.

If he won't stand behind his work, then you need to find another mechanic.
