Don't know if I'm doin this right or if I should post a new speedo question as reply. But bare w/ me, I'm new as of today.
I have somewhat the same question. Here's a short history: 1988 mustang GT T-Top, 16" wheels, 3:55 rear end, Stock Tran - manual 5, 85mph speedom, 20tooth speedo gear. I don't remember if I see 7 or 8 tooth gear in Tran. Never have found the right speedo gear. It's alway been off 5 to 10 mph.
Now I'm installing a 1993 (I think 93) 140mph speedom & new speedocable. I just read not to use a post 1989 140 speedom in a pre 90's. What I've done so far is pulled both clusters apart, swaped 140mph face sticker to 88's 85mph mounting plate, 140 speedom to 88's mounting plate cause 93's mounting wouldn't fit 88. Any Ideas what speedo gear I should go to? Or how to get speedom calibrated?
I'm too old to be getting tickets by accident.
P.S. my 20 tooth speedo gear is white.
