Default Non-Crash Airbag deployment...PICs inside

On December 6th, 2004 @ 10:14pm, I was driving through on a street that has been having work done on it for the past few weeks or so. Cars still were able to drive through it and the speed limit was 25 mphs. The part of the road that I was driving on was smooth for the most part, but when I saw that I was approaching a rough section of the road with a bump, I slowed down to almost a complete stop to go over it. As soon as I got over it, the airbags deployed. There was no front impact. I just went over a bump. When the airbags deployed, I was at a complete stop in the middle of the road, in shock as to WTF just happened.

PICS attached!

Any ideas, questions, comments?

Yikes! Your lucky you didn't get hurt. I would be contacting Ford about this situation. I would also contact the N.T.S.B. about it, just so it is on record and might help with a safety recall if enough problems are reported. And again, I'm glad you or a passenger didn't get seriously hurt over something like this.

I would not mess with anything on the car until an independent investigtion, air bags are very expensive, and I would want every advantage in a claim against Ford for free replacement if it was a design/material flaw.

Well I just took it to ford, well first, they looked at the car and were completely confused, then they tried to blame it on dirty battery Terminals (WTF) so i told em woud my airbags deploy when the battery dies??? Then the looked underneeth and seen the K member scraped up from bottoming out, (CAR IS LOWERED) and said thats what happend, Reading on the net and asking a few people i know w/ experiance told me that if you bump the K member hard enough it could set off the airbags! This sounds like a design flaw and safety issue since I guess if you bottom out your stang hard enough this could happen. WEll the dealer pretty much nicely told me to FCK off so it looks like ill be writing to ford corporate and the NTSHA about this... It seems like im not the only one whos ran into an airbag deployment cause of a low speed bottoming out! A friend of one of my mechanics did this to her 02 stang pulling into her driveway!

Considering that the bags are not supposed to deploy unless the two sensors up front are crushed they fed you a load of bs. Talk to a lawyer.

Actually, no. The sensors need not be damaged to deploy the air bags. By the time the sensors are crushed, deployment would be too late.

document EVERYTHING. ie.. Take pictures of everything. Make copys of every letter you send to or recieve from ford. Raise hell. Send letters thretening legal action. At verry least ford will replace your airbags free of charge to avoid a lawsuit. With siutuations like this you have to be persistant. They will brush u off at 1st, but keep at it. Remember that they are in the wrong. Good luck.
