I have a '96 mystic cobra, and whenever I use reverse to back out, reverse starts out fine, but when I finish backing out, and I push the clutch back in, there's a huge vibration coming from (it seems like) the rear end. Have any of you ever heard of this? It just started happening a month ago. I didn't add any mods to prompt this change, just changed the spark plugs, but I don't think that could cause this. This only happens when I'm in reverse, and when I push the clutch back in. Do I need a new clutch, gears? I have 70k miles on it. The vibration doesn't make any noise, it just kinda shakes the car real violently. I love my car except for this minor flaw... which I can definately live with... Thanks!
Just to clarify, it DOES shake with the clutch fully in (to the floor) and the tranny in reverse. It does NOT happen when the clutch is disengaged (my foot is not on it and I'm driving in reverse), or when the clutch is to the floor and I'm in any other gear than reverse. Sorry about the confused writing...

ok so it drives fine in reverse but when you push the clutch in and you're still going backwards it vibrates? well if it doesnt do it any other time, its not differential, or engine... so id link it to transmission or clutch.. if its only reverse id say reverse idler gear but not until the clutch is in.. hmm. maybe reverse syncro not letting the clutch all the way disengage? sorry, im not the tranny guy around here but i would think thats where it is.. in your reverse shaft or something... if you want some inside info on to how it works.. check this out.. its got animations and pictures in stuff... helped me out bunches.. http://www.howstuffworks.com/transmission1.htm
Odd, very odd! With the clutch pushed in (to floor) the transmission is just about a seperate component just sitting there except for the input shaft and the pressure plate which is bolted to the flywheel.
Alot of Mustang quirks like shuddering when letting the clutch out very slowly and creeping along are normal situations. As for your situation I would try and take it to a shop and install it on a hoist to replicate the problem so you can see what is happening.

That's exactly right. Weird huh? Sometimes its worse than others. I just got my gears changed out and I haven't had a chance to re-test it, but that might have fixed the problem, I'll check it out...

did they see anything while they were in there? im trying to figure out the clutch/differential thing... its not... this is the part where cars cause tools to get thrown across the yard.. lol.. glad you got it fixed tho... and thanx for the follow-up. we get a lot of cliffhangers where its like, "are you ok now or what?" enjoy your new POWERFUL pony.
Na, they didn't tell me if they saw anything in there that was messed up or anything, but that doesn't mean they didn't. Yeah, I know it was a pretty weird situation, I'm just glad it "happend to get fixed" by the gear swap. Preciate it...
