Question How much weight ?

Hi,
My Son has an 87 Mustang LX (4 cyl) 4 sp.
Regarding winter driving, and knowing that Mustangs are light in the back end, how much weight should I place in his trunk to help with traction? I have recently bought him 2 new Yokohama IG10 Snow Tires for the back and will be getting 2 more for the front. Presently, I have placed 4 sandbags(total weight-260 lbs.) as close to the back axle as possible.
I am doing the right thing here with the extra weight?

Cheers
Rick

I challenge the statement of losing gas mileage because of the extra weight; especially when the tires are not spinning (reason to add the weight).

Sounds like roughly enough weight to add (250# or so). I have two Ford Rangers that get 5-6 40# bags of water softener salt each winter. That covers these vehicles just fine for most Michigan winter conditions.

Slipping and sliding should be avoided whenever possible, but you can overdo it. Experience behind the wheel is so much more invaluable. I admonish my girls EVERY time they go out to be careful. Make sure your son gets to practice in a snow filled empty parking lot; get the feel for slipping and sliding in a safe place.
