Question Need some advice, badly

Ok where to start ( mustang all the way, nuff said )
In the past month sometimes my car "Mustang GT convertable 1997" will not start, so I figure it could be the batery lately been cold and so forth, so I turn the key give it a little gas and keep it at 1k rpm, well after anywhere between 1-30 mins I hear a pop/thumb under the hood, also feel it a little and then the rpm's kick up a notch and the car is good to go, mind you it dosent happen all the time, and when it does it's random and I some times just give it a little gas it goes sometimes it takes a while, it just concerns me that when it does this it will not start until it makes the thump sound under the hood..

A freind who works at a 90's mustang garage said he is not to sure without going in deep, but unless i know for sure i can't afford to take the time off work unless it is a problem that can be resolved and i can make the time.
Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Default Problem

I haven't had this problem with my mustang, but my other Ford had some bad plugs, and I ended up with gasoline in the oil. Maybe if you check the oil, it may be at a higher level than you should be at, my problem was solved with new plugs and an oil change....

Humm, a friend said it could be either plugs, air vacum intake??, I have noticed it smells awefull lately when I start it and spews out some nasty looking fumes/smoke i guess you could say.

To add, I had this problem again less than 20 mins ago, and it held onto the rpms just barley making the car shake a little then when I hit the gas it died when i released it, Is there anything that regulates the rpm settings maybe a timming is off, the only thing that really worries me is the thump.

vapor control system, I have been searching around and found that VCS removes the vapour from the fuel and if there isnt enough voltage the VCS will not remove the vapour so "reving" the engine creates a vacum and the VCS kicks in thus removing bulit up vapour.
Not sure if this applies to me, but worth a comment if anyone has ever had issues starting there car and getting a smell of gas and having to give the car gas for a while for it to start, .. But ultimatly it 's the "thud" that concerns me, if it's just pressure or somthing failing.
