Default Floor Jack Use

OK, this is my first post so don't be to hard on me. If I am in the wrong forum, just tell me where to go. (You should have fun with that line) I have a 1997 GT convertible. Both the ownert manual and the factory service manual caution about using a floor jack under the center of the differentiol housing. Is this a safety issue or will I actually damage something by using a floor jack in this manner? The service manual suggest jacking the rear end with the floor jack on the rear axle assembly tubes. What is the reason for this caution. Thanks

it is a safety issue........it raises the car off the ground, which can become unstable, and you will have people that will try to work under the car jacked up like that........if you jack it up with a floor jack, just be sure to use jack stand's before you go under the vehicle...........hotwheels of turborides

It is a safety issue. Unfortunately, some will argue this point. We had a thread late last year on this same issue.....and I was appalled at the amount of bad advice given (hopefully not taken).

Your vehicle's differential is strong enough to be used as a jacking point.....BUT DON'T....EVER !! Take the extra time to jack up each corner of your vehicle properly - from the corner. "Generally" this means near the shock mounts on the axle tube or front arms.

wyominghotwheel is correct. Instability is a literal killer when an auto is up on a jack. There is absolutely nothing you can do but watch when your car desides to fall. Failure to properly raise your car, or fail to properly support it while raised, is a mechanical suicide note. Also, improper location can cause mechanical damage.

Thanks, PAUL STEVENS for asking such an important question on your very first post. If you take the safe approach, you will be around this forum for years to keep us informed on all your mods and conquests with your GT.

Default Thanks

Thanks for all the info. I tought it must be a safety issue. I always use jack stands but it is so much easier to jack on the diff housing and slide both stands under at one time. Your comments on the safety (or unsafe) center jacking have been noted. Thanks.
BTW, when I regestered I ended up with my real name for login. It has been changed, I am now "ponyexp"
