Default grind

I have been hearing this grinding noise coming from my rear diff. I jacked the car up and spun the wheels by hand and can hear the grind. I took the wheel off along with the brake drum and didn't see anything. I spun the axle again and nothing. I put the brake drum back on and would hear the grind again. Again I looked at the brake drum and didn't notice anything. What could it be?

What year car? Make and model? It is not safe to assume anything.

Sounds like it could be brake shoes rubbin on the brake drum....a good thing if the shoes and drum are in good shape. Adjusting the shoes for proper clearance may be in order.

It's an 88 Mustang LX 5.0. I never thought about adjusting the brakes. I have been pricing brakes drums. I'm glad that you stopped by to say something.:thumbsup I'll let you know what happens tomorrow when I take it to base hobby shop. Thanks.....

I went to the Hobbie shop on base and was looking at the Brake drums. While I was doing that one of the Mechanics on hand was lokking brakes and axles and said that my wheel bearings where in need of replacement. While he was doing something else I had one of the other mechanics look at it and he said that there was to much play on the axles and that I need to replace the bearings. I took the brake drums to have them checked for roundness and they were way out of specs and not round. They said that it was from the wheel bearings being bad. How hard is it replace the bearings? How long should it take someone with all the proper tools and a lift?
