It varies based on what is done to the cars. The stock specs say that most 4.6 litre engines are faster, however after looking at some of the 1/4 mile times that some of these 5.0 owners on this board get I'm not sure I would believe those specs lol.

I think the 4.6, 4 valve cobra motor is faster stock than most 5.0's. But I think the 5.0 is faster than the 96-98 4.6. The 99 4.6 is probably faster than the 5.0's. Again this is in their stock attire.
Potential wise...the 5.0 definately has the edge because the duration of their life and the R&D thrown in that direction that has produced a wide variety of mild, strong and wild street stuff for the 5.0.

I agree and the 99+ aftermarket pieces will come in the future, the aftermarket has been slow to support these new engines.

I was just curious because I have a built 5.0 that should run in the 14's somewhere, and a guy i know put intake, exuast, and 125 shot of nos on street tires to his 99'4.6 and is running 13.6 or so he says

I don't know how you built your 5.0 motor, but if you match dollar for dollar spent, a 5.0 will produce more for less.
I'm sure that intake he is running cost a few penny's. Plus he is running a power adder. Not to mention that the 99 has more horsepower stock to begin with then your 5.0. But I wouldn't want to be him in the long run with NOS on a 4.6L. They just don't take well to it.
I like the 4.6 engine because it so smooth and sounds great. But the 5.0 is more durable, cheaper, and easier to work on.

I have raced two 4.6 stock mustangs at the track a total of 5 times. Both were stock and could run mid to high 14’s. My 5.0 has 3.73 gears, cat back, k&n and under drive pulleys. I beet both 4.6’s every time I raced them. The 4.6’s were starting to pull top end, they cross the finish line about 1 or 2 mph higher then me (they are making more HP) but they don’t have the low end or mid range to handle my 95GT.
The 5.0 can be made faster for less, parts are plenty and affordable. Good Performance Shops that know 5.0s are plenty.
Bigger engines or strokers are low cost and easy to install.
The early 4.6 SOHC from 96-98 lacks some power and definately needs better heads and intake. This would be the last modern mustang i would buy. Would be the most expensive to modify.
The 99+ 4.6 has extremely good power, stronger trans and much better flowing heads and intake. Responds great to Chips, Larger TB, Exhaust and of course to Supercharging.
A base supercharger kit can take a 99+ Pony past 350 HP easily and 400+ Hp are atainable just by using larger injectors, dynoed chip and a smaller SC pulley.

You said it...Not stock for stock. Look at your mods. do the same to the 4.6 and you will get waxed. The 4.6 is geared for fuel economy not performance. Give them 3.73's and look out.
I personally do not trust the 4.6, there have been too many different 4.6's so far. Ford service bays are swapping out more 4.6's under warrenty than they did with 5.0's
I've heard the same thing about the 4.6 with the dealers swapping them out. Mostly the police cruisers are having oil consumption problems in our area. The local dealers don't even look at them, they just replace the engine.
The original question was "Which is faster 5.0 or 4.6?"
