I'm probably going to have to break down and buy the 97 ford shop manual. I have the shop manual for my 65. Good with electrical, engine, drivetrain, brakes, and even paint. As for welding I need a little more practice before I will do it on something that needs to look good.

Well if you have the right tools and the will to learn..A moderator (I forget...sorry)just finished doing it and said it wasnt too hard.. but you have to have it just perfectly... if you can wait till they read this.... then you will have your answer .
Thanks, I'll let you know how it goes. I guess I still need to go ahead and buy the ford shop manual. $127.00 seems a bit much for one but the 65 shop manual is better than any Hanyes or Chiltons.

Here's the article I used when installing my gears. It was a lot easier than people made it out to be. FWIW...I've had my gears in for about 3 weeks now and they're perfectly silent. The main thing is making sure you get the pinion depth right. Once you do that, everything else more or less falls into place where it should.
If you get the Ford manual it will show you that they use a special tool to come up with the desired pinion depth. I have personally used this and it is very slick. As you do not need the pionion gear at all to do the set up
Once that the proper shim is selected it gets installed between the larger pionion bearing and the pinion gear. Bearing preload is very important as well as backlash and a proper pattern on the teeth.
Don't be alarmed if this install will take longer than 4 hours. If you are doing it for the first time I would guess around 8 hours before you are done.

I've used this tool 3 times now. SWEEEEEET! comes out perfect each time. I think I'm going to have to buy one! I'm not sure how it works with aftermarket gears, but on FMS gears works great. Besides the FMS gear set is the best in my opinion.
