Default How Many Miles?

If your 98 has average miles (120000 or so) it may be due an overhaul. Unusual oil use can be the early signs of worn rings, bearings, valve seals, etc. Since it sounds like you're about ready for the PI upgrade, I'd consider an overhaul at the same time.

Its unlikely but its also possible that you have a high speed pressure leak that only occurs at highway speeds - check under the car for caked-on oil around the rear seals and the oil pan.

Regardless, I'd be tempted to do the overhaul and PI upgrade at the same time.

Tripple Black is right about the rebuild. I would also consider using a 100% synthetic after you are finished with the rebuild. Go to :thumbsup http://Xtremesynthetic.com it will give you all the information you need about synthetics and their benifits. If you are using a petrolium oil and your running you stang the petrolium oil tends to heat up alot and give, what is called oil burn-off. 100% Synthetics run alot cooler in the engines than their petrolium counter part and it takes alot to break down a synthetic oil. Also, thier are oil blends out there. Which means they are part synthetic and part patrolium. If you are going to run your car, stick to the 100% synthetic oil. Also, the synthetic oil has a longer drain interval than the petrolium. Normal for the petrolium is about 3,000-4000 miles. The 100% Synthetic by Amsoil is 7,500 to 25,000 miles depending on the grade oil and the filter selection you make.
Hopefully, this helps you some what.

Although I agree that Amsoil is the very best synthetic and is superior to conventional motor oil, linking to your own commercial site is frowned upon not only here, but MOST automotive forums.

Also, check to see if there is oil in your coolant.

If you look at my site, you will see my market is fleet and commercial accounts. I'm glad you like the product though. I'm just giving this person my opinion because I know the subject matter. Would I turn business away, no but I'm not solicitating it.
Thanks!!

If you don't see a cloud of smoke when you start your car, if you don't have oil (lots of oil) in your coolant and if your car doesn't leak oil in your driveway, it is most likely that you have a stuck oil ring somewhere, or just worn oil rings.
Depending on if you want to keep the car or not, those are your options:

1. Do nothing but using high quality oil. always check for the oil level.

2. Run a very high concentration of cleaning oils or ATF in the motor oil. This can help sometime. (how ever you risk damaging your motor, bearings)

3. Take heads off, do an in car rebuild with a flex hone, the old pistons and new rings.

4. Take the motor out and professionally rebuild.

I hope this helps!
