I have a '92 Mustang LX hatchback (4 cylinders). I've only had it for 4 months. It uses a ton of fuel. I drove 50 miles the other day and it used almost half a tank of gas. It uses significantly more fuel at highway speed than in the city. Does anyone have any ideas of what I can check to fix this problem? I'd prefer to try some things myself before spending hundreds of dollars taking it to a mechanic, but I don't know where to start.

Yes, a tune up has been done. All fluids regularly changed. It also has brand new tires. Should I try another tune-up? I was thinking of changing the fuel filter this week, but it seems like the problem would be more than just that.
Did you change the fuel filter when you did the tune-up?

100 miles to the tank on a 2.3? That's a serious problem, my 5.0 gets a little better than 300 to a tank. Check your timing, possible clogged exhaust, air filter, fuel filter, pcv valve, vacuum leaks, new plugs, plug gap, new wires, distributor cap and rotor, and you can try running a can of cleaner in your tank. Is your CEL coming on, you might wanna check fo codes. Post as you narrow down the list and what your results are.

I Would Start With The Fuel Regulator, Is The Car Running Rich Is The Tail Pipe Black And Suttey Inside, Then You Are Rich, Not Knowning The History Of The Car, Some One Could Have Been Messing With The Reg., Or The Mass Airflow Sensor, Mite Even Have Had The Wrong Injectors Put In It.
