Synthetic or regular oil

Ok I just bought a 95 Mustang GT and have no clue what type of oil the pervious owner had in it. I have a few light mods. But I was wondering should I switch to syn. or should I just put regular in the engine it has 114k on it. Any help?

Hi,

I would stay with regular oil, but maybe try the synthetic too see what may happen... With the miles on it, and if the other owner use regular, you may just want to keep putting regular oil in her.

ok cool thanks alotI have heard rumors that changing to a Syn would eat away the oil deposits that the dino oil left and make it start leaking dont know how true this is though.

hey, stick with regular oil.......... i used to run a fast lube center and it is true if you switch to synthetic you clean out the false seals in your engine (places where your regular seals have been worn but oil deposits and dirt filled it in... you will most likley clear those out and start to leak..... that is if you see any seepage spots right now.... on the other hand consumer reports did a report a long time ago and determined that synthetic oil is not that much better than regular oil...... there was something like 2 or 3 one millionths of a differance in engine wear...... ( dont remember exactly) but the differance was so minute that it didnt make sence to use synthetic oil... but i would recommend using an oil stablizer like lucas oil.... have heard lots of good stuff about it and that is also available in a synthetic form that bonds with conventional oil..... worth talking a look at

Finally some common sense words on oil. My1ststang is correct about the difference in conventional vs synthetic. Just do some searches on the net and you'll find that when research is done on the subject there is little advantage if any to synth. Mobil 1 being the worst of the synth oils is barely able to beat Castrol GTX in any category. Considering the difference in price, I'd rather use GTX and change it every 2500/3500 miles. Stck with conventional and save you're money for gas, you'll need it!

I would use synthetic oil. I switched to synthetic and i will never go back. I burned some oil for the first 3,000 miles but now it has stopped. If you want the best protection for your engine, especially if you plan on racing use synthetic...period. Every day driving use regular. First although in regular day to day driving the benefits of synthetic oil may not be largly noticable the margin does grow larger in cars and engines that are used more agressively, such as racing. Now I don't know how everybody else drives but I myself have to step on my mustang every now and then just for kicks. And as for leaks and brands, I switched from regular quaker state to full synthetic Mobil 1 and have had no leaks what so ever, and my car has 226000 miles on it. Now if you switch from syn to reg oil the reg oil can tend to build up gummy deposits inside your engine which isn't good. Now for the brands, a privately owned lub company in my area did research on oils nationwide and found Mobil 1 to be the top syn oil on the market and #2 believe it or not is Wal-mart's Super-Tech Full-syn oil. Hope any of this helps if not thats fine to, but I will not use anything other than Mobil 1 in my vehicles because since I switched my cars have been getting 2-3 mpg better mileage and the oil has been cleaner between changes which means less work for the engine over time.
