Can I swap my '91 5.0 8.8 for an '89 Ranger 8.8 rearend and does VIN say what gears?

Hey I have an 89 Ranger with a 8.8 rear end, and I have a '91 5.0 with a 8.8 rear end. Is there anyway to find out what gears are in my truck with the VIN? Is there a site on the net? Would that swap work?

you cant tell the gear ratio buy the vin, however there is a code on the data tag, and the Ranger rear end is offset, and will not fit
