I have a 96 Mustang and the top won't go up. The dealer looked at it and said that the hydraulic cyclinder (cylinders?) were broken and leaking and have to be replaced. They want $1200. Hell no! I've seen places where I can get the parts but am I getting in over my head to try and fix this?

In my 86 mustang, I had one of the cylinders crack in half. I just put the top up and down by standing in the back seat and pulling it up and down (you've got to grab it by both corners.)

Yeah, they would certainly be cheaper to do by yourself, but they are quite complex. I'd get an estimate from someone who installs vinyl roofs, etc.
