Crapped out EGR

The shattay 2.3 in my Mustang (And don't you worry, the 5.0 is being dropped in this winter) has a crapped out EGR...I was wondering, would plugging the vacuum line be the best thing I could do without replacing it to make it idle better? I got it going pretty good now, after adjusting the carb, but it's still not as smoothe as i'd like it to be. I'm not putting any money into it, it's not worth it. So any handiman tips you guys have I would greatly appreciate :P

Remove the EGR valve, drink a can of soda.
Cut a piece of the can out in the same shape as the EGR valve.
Insert piece of can between EGR valve and manifold.
