Default 5.0 HO to 1972 C4

I have a 1990 5.0 Ho out of a Lincoln Mark VII and bolting to a 1972 Torque converter. Both has 11.5 bolt pattern, but when I push the torque converter in the transmission as far as it will go, then I bolt up the motor the torque converter is up against the flexplate and you can't turn the converter to line up the bolts with the bolt hole on the flexplate. will the flexplate not work, even if they have the same bolt pattern. If not what do I need to change the flexplate, the torque converter, or the bell housing? I have the aod Trans. that came with the 5.0, but it is completely gone. will the torque converter on the aod fit the C4? Need help I have motor in a 1966 Mustang, but no tranny yet. Also the flexplate Has 164 teeth.

Try measuring the distance between the bellhousing edge and the torque converter face (to the bolt boss) on both transmissions to see how much difference you have. That could help determine what to do. I don't think you should be experiencing a problem. But it does sound like your clearances aren't correct. Do you have a plate between the motor and the bell (behind the flexplate)?

The flexplate is from the 5.0 and the converter is from the C4, I measure the clearance on the AOD and it look the same, and the back plate is the same thickness as the backplate that came with the C4 tranny. Thanks for your comments. because I am stumped

I want to thank everybody who replied here, I have got the tranny in, It went in smooth after I ask My neighbor to help me. One work the jack and tranny, and one to watch the alighment. Sometimes you got to swallow your pride and don't try to do it by yourself. I appreciate all the advice. Luckily I had stop tightning the bolts the other day as soon as i seen it hitting the flexplate, so my pump should still be good.
