Default VIN Numbers

First up sorry if this is in the wrong place, ive had a look aroudn and think im in the right place.

Ive got a VIN code that i need to figure out and im trying to place each section of the code. So far i have it as going, Year of Production, Place Built, Serial Code, Engine Code, Warranty Number, Colour Code, District Sales Office, Style code, Trim Code, Scheduled build date, then its where i get unsure i think it follows with the Rear Axle Code, then the Transmission Code, but i am left with one digit at the very end of the VIN which could also be the rear axle code.

I dont know if any of you have any experience with the ordering of items in a VIN code but if you do this would be realy helpful

The car in question is a 1972 Mustang

Thanks in advance

The VIN will only tell you the basics: assembly plant, year, type. The rest of the data is on the door tag: trans, color, trim, axle, etc

ive already decoded most of the vin and it gives all the details i listed, with the full vin code. The only problem im having is where the rear axle code is located, it could be one of 2 digits and im not sure if its the very last number or what comes just after the scheduled build date code thats the only question i really need answering if you know?

i know its a kinda bitty question, its actually to do with a a level project for a program that will decode full VINS giving all the details of the car, but obvisouly i need to know the exact order they run in

Ford has a nice tool to decode vins and there is also some .PDF file links at the bottom that will explain what part of the VIN has what in it. Here is the link https://www.fleet.ford.com/maintenan...ls/default.asp

For general information on VIN requirements try http://www.nhtsa.gov and/or google "part 565 vin". Part 565 is the ISO standard for VIN requirements.

I think your biggest problem is, the standard didn't go into effect until 1981. For older vehicles, your best bet is to try here http://iml.jou.ufl.edu/projects/students/Blommel/

Default The other guys were right...

I've been a Ford owner since the late 70's, and I've owned many Fairlanes, Torinos, Rancheros, and more. And I have never seen a Ford Axle code hidden within the VIN code. But if you want to e-mail me the VIN code to my e-mail address, ( red88mustanglx@yahoo.com ) I'll see if I can decipher it for you. But what happened to the codes on the door tag, or the rear end tag? if you have either of those, it's easy to figure out the code for your axle ratio.

Let me know if I can be of any help. I have list after list of every axle code Ford ever used in the 70's and some from late 60's. (Now I all I have to do is find my list book).
