1966 mustang charging problem

I've replaced the alternator and voltage regulator, and it still only puts out 12.40 volts. When i drive it, it starts missing just before it comes into its power band.
I'm thinking the wiring may be a problem, and would like to know if anyone here has a wiring schematic of the charging system. I'm not convinced that the wiring at the voltage regulator is correct. The previous owner had the wiring cut and taped back together.
If I slowly run the idle up to 2500 r.p.m.'s and let it stay there for a few mins with my voltmeter on the battery between the positive and negitive post it comes up to 14 plus volts. possible i may have gotten a faulty voltage regulator? Is there a test I can run on the alternator or voltage regulator to see its maximum output. I've had the new alternator rechecked at a local parts house, and it is good.
Any replys will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
