Usually, it's something interfering with the gas pedal without the knowledge of the driver. Something that was under the seat . . .
Otherwise, it could be a cruise control switch, or a stuck throttle cable.

It could be your floor mat. It has happened to me before. The floor mat slid forward and bunched up in front of the pedal and did not let the pedal come back up.

Particularly with boots or high heeled shoes . . . it's why there's a hook on the floormat now.
If you just had it vacuumed, they may not have installed it correctly, if you have the OEM mats.

First, since the '04's have not an electronic throttle, and the cruise falls out as soon as you hit the brakes, it has to be a mechaical problem.
What is left now is:
- Flour mats
- Bad throttle cable (very unlikely)
- Sticking throttle blade at wot (very unlikely)
- an aftermarket part getting into the way of the throttlebody
- an electric cable getting hung up in the throttlebody / cable
- faulty cruise controll actuator
I know the 03/04 Cobra's were having similar problems and the gas pedal was getting stuck underneath the carpeting. I have never had that problem yet, but people were trimming their carpets. Worth a look.

They didnt hook it up to the computer as I requested and they insist it was the carpeting hang on the pedal I disagree ..... The car was way more powerful than it had every been or has been since .I feel it was something with the electronics .I plan to take it to another dealer when I have time
I noticed a mention of the carpet I wonder why they havent recalled the cars and fixed it sounds alot cheaper than a lawsuit if some one was injured by this

Computers don't work that way, and the throttle is mechanical. The computer can't engage the throttle. It's physically impossible.
on a 2005+, it could be at least "theoretically" possible, but it's simply mot possible on a pre 2004.
Cruise control can engage the throttle, but inspecting the wires and contacts would rule that out.

that's why they put hooks on them now.
It may have only SEEMED more powerful, because you weren't prepared for it. But it's almost as powerful as a pre98 GT. It's no slouch.

Hi Guys/Gals - im new to the forum, but not to mustangs.
Thought I would chime in my experience with this.
Just the other day I had a car (F150 truck, actually) almost rear end me while driving the 90 vert. I saw him coming up without braking and almost instinctively I stomped on it to get out of the way. The rear broke free and started "skating" - so I let off the gas - only it didnt stop! 'course I steered out of it and quickly shut down the engine (that was hitting the rev limiter...)
Had I not known how to drive (or rather, I think I do!) who knows what would have happened - I would have been rear ended, or when the throttle stuck I might have slid around into a ditch or maybe even oncoming traffic?
And the end of the story is - Once I shut the motor down I realized the __FLOOR_MAT__ stuck in front of the gas pedal, causing the car to stay WOT!
What surprises me is a) that this is even possible (on my other vehicles the mat cant do this), and b) that there was never a recall/dealer fix on this issue...
Sorry, but I will NEVER have a driver side floor mat in my car again. A carpet kit is 100 bucks, and thats a lot cheaper than what could have happened! And sorry, but saying they added the hook to fix the problem means they are aware of the issue. That could (i am guessing) make for a negligence suit since they didnt fix the problem going back.

Listen to KS on this one, he has lots of experience driving in high heels.
Seriously though, this is not something new or limited to the Stang. I've stuck the throttle open on several cars over the years because of the damn floor mat. Even worst, I've had the damn floor mat bunch up under the pedal and prevent full throttle, there's a good ricer excuse- 'My floor mat cost me the race'. A lot of newer cars have the little hook by the seat, the old lady's Intrepid for example.
