A dyno is a device used to measure how much HP and Torque a car or engine makes.
There are basically 2 dynamometer types:
1. Engine Dynos: they measure the HP of an engine, basically they are used to test the engines BEFORE they are mounted in a car. HP numbers such as the ones given by car manufacturers are measured this way.
2. Chassis Dynos: used to measure the RWHP (HP at the wheels) of a car, the car is placed over a platform that has a big "drum", the rear wheels (or the wheels with traction) are placed over that drum and by measuring the resistance of the drum over a period of time, torque and hp are calculated.
The 2nd option is what most of us call a Dyno, but there are other variables that can be measured such as air fuel ratio and exhaust gas temps. Those variables are a big help when tuning a car.
