I was wondering if anyone else has had issues with the distributorless 2.3L engines? I found this old thread and posted to it:
http://www.allfordmustangs.com/forum...ead.php?t=5069
but no-one seems to be reading it lately- it also seems that most of the people who posted on it are no longer around or something. (I got a bunch of bounced emails). I'd like some input if anyone is out there who know about this problem. I'd rather not spend a lot on extra parts but get it right the first time.
thanks,
MB
Here is my reply on that thread:
I have a 93 with the same 2.3L dual spark setup that is exhibiting the same problems that
gcerny12 originally posted: "...2.3L that has an intermittent problem. Some times the check engine light comes on and the car starts running rough. When the light goes out it runs normally. The code I keep getting is 223 loss of dual plug inhibit control"
Additionally I also am getting the 224 code that seems to have something to do with "loss of IDM input to processor/spout ground/coil 1,2,3,4"
I'm not exactly sure what that means in relation to the symptoms.
I am wondering if all I need to do is change the DIS or if I have other problems also or instead. Also are any of these parts (like the DIS, Coil packs, or PCM) available at autoparts stores or do you have to get them from Ford? (what is the approximate price for the DIS or PCM?)
also I found some stuff about this problem on the autozone web page
http://www.autozone.com/servlet/UiBr...3d801abde4.jsp
They seem to be saying that you need some special test harnesses or some thing to check these parts? and that you need a rotunda "averaging" DVOM rather than a "True RMS" type like Fluke makes. I'm guessing that my $20 walmart specal is probably the averaging type, any thoughts?
What is the best way to test the coil packs? I think I found that online somewhere but can't find it again today.
I don't want to just throw money at this problem but I do need the car to be running well for the emissions inspections that they do here. They won't even test it if the Check Engine light is on.
ALso if anyone that has had this problem is still around to tell me how it worked out over time, like did you have to change any other parts or anything since? I see that the original post was in '02 and the last one before me is '04.
This car's been good to me up till now - I bought it new (so there shouldn't have been any one stupid working on it - other than a couple of the mechanics I've had to take it to once - to be fair some of the other couple shops were great). So far, I've been able to fix the problems (time willing) and keep on crusing. It has over 265K miles and all these parts are original, the engine's never been overhauled or really had any problems other than a timming belt, O2 sensor and an altenator or two. It still has good compression and was getting decient gas milage until this last year.
Any help or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
