I'm sick of driving the slow Ford Focus 2003 SE I have so I'm thinking of trading it in for $6000. With that money, I'm hoping to buy a mustang, which has obviously more power.
My concern is that I would need this mustang to last me until 2010 when I graduate college. The best mustang deals that I've looked at below $7k are usually from 1999 and 2000 with about 75k-90k miles. I'm just wondering whether my purchase of a mustang with that kind of work would last me until 2010. Recent Fords have a tendency to suck A LOT in terms of longetivity so I'm wondering if the mustang follows in the same trend as other Fords and I figured that this forum would be the place for me to get a good answer.

Much appreciated.
The 96-04 Mustangs have an excellent record, better than Civics of the same year.
the 05 GT has been good, but the 4.0Ls haven't been reliable.

Longevity is directly related to driving style and more importantly preventative maintenance. I have driven for years now without being stranded, but I am religious about maintaining my rides. As for mustang durability, the 89 LX 5.0 I just bought has 228,000 miles. It burns very little oil despite being thrashed for much of it's life (6 T-5's). What it did have going for it was Mobil 1 synthetic since early childhood and a good tune. This car was owned by a high school buddy since 91 so I know it's maintenance history and I know it's racing history.
As previously stated, the '96-'04 Mustangs actually have an excellent record. They are a very good proven design. The real issue you will face is the actual car that you are looking at. Has it been abused, damaged in an accident, etc.? The use or abuse that the individual example has seen will determine how well it will hold up for you.

For 2005-2006 Mustangs, according to Consumer Reports, they are to be avoided like the plague....predictable reliability was a solid black circle (the worse)!
Still, I love my 2006 V6 even with it's warts and roughness.

KSCoyote, this is NOT true.... the Civic from years 1998 through 2004 has EXCELLENT standing per Consumer Reports....the Mustang in that same year range has only "Very Good".
The Honda Civic has ALWAYS scored higher by CR over the Mustang. I just looked this up at ConsumerReports.com and see that your assertions are wrong.
And this coming from a 2006 V6 Mustang owner...I love my Mustang but I will not allow that love to color my judgement, my objectivity. It is what it is.

Over the v8 -yes -but they're also more likely to be abused than any civic.
The Civic is not over the 3.8L v6. Since switching to the 4.0L, the six has been the most troublesome.
Do a match, I've already posted several scores from JD Power and Consumer Reports over the years.
Search under "Consumer Reports Mustang Civic."

Well I just checked CR's site for those listed model years and it seems the CR pages you're looking at are different from the ones I'm looking at. The Civic got excellent across the board...the Mustang did not, not any year Mustang. I can't say about JD Powers however.

You are looking at the combined, not by model.
you've seen them in the past, I just looked at your post history.
If you want to rehash an old argument you've already lost when the data were available. Fine by me.
But I reckon it IS close to holiday time, when the trolls come out to play.
I expect to see Reekostang, and the other Hondahead in the near future.
