Default Fords traction control

Does Ford utilize two types of traction control? i.e. Control of ANY rear wheel slip, or, the type that keeps the rear wheels closely aligned with the front. In other words, straight line and it doesn’t activate. (Or so I’ve heard). Thanks. Pappy.

I know of two myself. The the tried and true posi unit and like what is on my parents Windstar van. It uses the brake system. There is a sensor at each wheel. When the sensor picks up a differance in wheel speed it, the traction control, will apply the brake to the faster wheel/wheels until it matches speed with the other/others

from what i've heard it actually does two things, it brakes to match speed, and also slows the firing of pistons so that the wheels can catch up. i think it only brakes below 35 mph

Then, does the type that doesn't mess with braking, just adjust the retard only?

If so, is it linear with wheel spin, in other words more spin-more retard, or does it simply jerk the timing back to a predetermined level?

I'm hoping the traction control works better on the GT than it did on my 2001 Windstar Sport... I just read that it brakes the rear wheels detected by the "Traction Control" portion of the ABS computer and will also not allow the engine to "rev up" when you push further on the accelerator.
I'm taking off the 17" wheels and replacing them with a set of 15" aluminums from a '94 so I can use a set of 205-60 Goodyear Ultragrip for the winter here in Canada. They are suppossed to have silica sand embedded in the first 65% of the tread for snow and ice conditions. With this combination of tire and traction control system I hope it works for the winter... Im sure it will work better than the early 70's when I used to drive a '72 Mach 1 all year round. Wish me luck, lol...

i can't wait for winter! i live in Erie, PA, which is right off of the lake, which means we get "lake effect" snow. wow does that suck, it's rediculus...if i had some cash i'd get a winter junker, but i don't have jack now. i'll definatly be getting snow tires and probably something in the back to weigh it down a bit.

Yes, it would definately be nice to be able to say " If I want snow, I'll go to it, just keep it there "
