Default Air Conditioning problem in my 1993 Mustang.

I have a 1993 4 cyl. I recently tried to start the A/C and all i got wa. hot air. After checkingit out i realized that there was a reconditioned oump in the car and the r12 seems to have been changed to r-134. I bought a recharge kit and when i went to change the adaptors i foung out they had already been changed. I plugged in the r-134 and shook it per inst. had the car running with the a/c switch on max as well as the blower. After 3/4 of the 1st can i had 40 lbs acc. to the gauge but the compressor was not working. After fooling with the plug on the pump the comp. turned on & then off and the coolong fan ingaged for a few seconds then went off. It did this off & on for 15 min. never staying on after the cool fan ingaged. What the hell is wrong. I tried it GAIN TODAY IT STILL HAS PRESSURE BUT NEVER ONCE KICKED ON TODAY. Help if you can.

If the compressor is cycling then I would *GUESS* you may not have enough freon - but you could also have too much.

The ONLY way to *safe* know what is happening (and subsequently what to do to correct the problem) is to measure with the proper gauges - measuring both high and low pressures at the same time. PLEASE tell me you aren't doing this with one of those junk low pressure gauges that pretends to judge how much freon is in the vehicle with some blue, green, yellow, red color zones.

BTW, Im sorry, "freon" is a registered trademark for R-12. I meant "R-134", I call it "freon" anyways. :P

clean out the condensor. I have changed alot of a/c for people this year and the number one problem is the condensor is plugged. start the car, turn on the a/c to max, fan to max. and find a good high powered hose or pressure washer. start cleaning from the condesor to the radiator. if the a/c compressor kicks in keep cleaning untill all of the water is comming out the radiator side clean. what happens is that the A/C system has a high pressure switch somewhere near the dryer or expansion valve/orfacing tube. when the condensor is plugged with bugs, dirt, weeds, ect, it causes the pressure on the compressor to sky roocket, as it cannot get rid of the heat, and the pressure get to around 350-450psi on the head on the compressor and the system shuts down to save the compressor. try that first and I will watch the thread to see if it helps, if not I will find something else. also make sure the belt is good and tight
