Squeak Minor problem answer: The Brake Pedal rotates on a long steel tube that can get dry (and squeak). A small amount of lube will cure this. Its hard for large humans like me to reach, but if you can, get a flashlight and look up where the brake pedal 'attaches" up under the dash, next to the steering column. If a squirt of oil stops the squeak, you found your culprit. If you have a clutch, it also rotates on the same piece. Another culprit can be the spring, which can distort and start rubbing (or have something pushing against it). Look for this as well.
If your 01 has high miles, it may well be in need of a Master Cylinder, where a noise can be an early indicator of a problem. If your pedal is "mushy", this can be a sign, as well as brake fluid leaking under the master cylinder; into the power booster; or even into the carpet inside the car. If you find brake fluid dripping down, get it fixed pronto.
