i was wondering if i got hosed. i just got my car inspected (mustang v6 1999) and they said i need new rotors and pads all around and a new caliper (sp?) ... also headlight alignment and license plate light.
i took it to a local ford dealership. they decided to charge me $1120...i told them that's a lot, and they called something like autozone or advanced auto parts. they said they could use those and get the price down to $602.
my main question is, for this amount of work, is this way to expensive..and for a casual driver that doesn't slam on his brakes unless a stupid person pops infront of him, are these "advanced auto parts" parts going to cause any problem? are ford products that much better? am i going to notice a difference or hear what they say would be "squeaking", or are they just BS?
That sounds a bit high to me...Try midas for the breaks then a body shop will more than likely charge u less to align ur ligths the license plate light u could do ur self

dont go to ford, theyll alwasy get ya. they just screwed over my dad on a brake job. i dont trust them anymore, go to midas or another brake place, itll probably be cheaper.

ALL of this was done by myself....including the porting and gea
Pads from say, Autozone can be better quality. They have both Organic and Semi Metallic and their Semi's have a less coarse texture so they dont eat rotors up as fast.
Plus the good fact is $19.99 they have lifetime pads.. keep the receipt and box and you get em free for as long as you want.
I dont know if Midas does it... but there are some brake-change places that do the lifetime replacement thing as well.
Changing brakes yourself is much cheaper and not very hard to do. The hardest part is needing two people to bleed the brakes unless you have speed bleeders put on than you can do it by yourself.

You dont have to bleed the brakes when you change your pads. Just slowly compress the caliper back in with a C-clamp and the old pad... some screw in so that way works too... do it slow and you wont back-flood your master cylinder.
