Default 2000 v6 mustang - Low rpm

Hi,

I drive a 2000 mustang v6 3.8L (base model), bought it few months back. It is a stick shift. I am not able to get the rpm to go beyond 2500. Usually it hovers around 1500rpm. Only time I can reach 2500 is on first (~20mph) or second gear(~35mph). I would want to give more gas and see if it goes beyond 2500 but the noise becomes really loud, like a grinding/growling noise, and I ease up. Is this normal? Is there any problem with my car?

Thanks.

Sounds like you're pinging.

check your fuel filter 1st, then try switching to premium fuel.

Someone may have programmed the computer.

How many miles are on the car?

When's the last time you put a bottle of dry gas in it? How long has this been happening?

If you buy a used car, someone may have altered the program. On a stock car, premium is not required.

The car has 70000 miles on it. I bought this car early last year. This has been happening from the beginning. I am not sure if its the fuel filter. I replaced the fuel filter some 3 months back.

"Someone may have programmed the computer." Is that ok to do? Do i have 'reprogram' it? What is the advantage of programming it to run in low rpms?

"When's the last time you put a bottle of dry gas in it?" I am sorry I don't know what a dry gas is. I always use the regular gas, no premium or 'dry gas'.

The computer may have been reprogrammed or chipped for 93 octane fuel.

I think you're going to have to take it to a dealership.

93 octane fuel - is that the premium gas? If use this gas, the rpm can go over the red line?

"I bought this car early last year." It should be early this year.

Over the redline?

Why on earth would you want to do that?

I don't want to and I don't think i will. Just want to know how much a difference it will make.

And why would someone reprogram it? Is there any advantage for doing something like that?

Should I be worried about this? Or can I just ignore it? I don't do any racing or anything. If I keep driving under normal condition, is it ok or it is still bad for the car?

Thanks for your quick replies.

pinging is VERY bad for the car.

Try running 93 octane and see if it goes away. If not you should get it checked out. Could be a dirty injector, fuel filter, pinched line, etc.
