Hey all, i'm new to engine building and all. i have a few questions. i just bought a rebuilt roller short block. i have a set of gt40 heads in the machine shop. i'm going to run a victor jr single plane intake, 600 cfm 4 barrell, and hooker super competition headers. i'm staying with the stock cam in the rebuilt short block. is this a good set up? is my intake too much for my motor? i was told i need washers for the head bolts for them to work? what else is there that i have overlooked?
the victor jr may be a little much on a 302. If you have high compression, and a cam with much more lift and duration, you may be able to get away with it.
You should probably have the heads ported out to the max, and use a speed demon 4 barrel carb to make it work. The stock cam wont give you enough vacuum to allow the intake to breath well. The heads may also restrict airflow. Compression is gonna have to be close to 11 to 1 on that setup, to get the most of what it could offer as far as Hp + TQ.

You're going to be very disappointed with the performance of the engine with this setup. A single plane intake is going to dilute any intake velocity. Velocity is what produces torque. The stock cam will be inadequate and past its rpm range for the single plane intake to be of any benefit. Go with a dual plane such as a Weiand Stealth. Remember that you want a balanced package ,you want compatable intake and exhaust breathing. You'll need to decide what rpm range you expect this engine to run. If this is going to be a street driven car then you will want something that will idle deciently and produce torque, because torque is what gets the car moving not horsepower. As the deal with the washers on the head bolts,5.0 engines use a 7/16 in. head bolt and the GT40 heads are drilled for the 351 engine's 1/2 in. head bolt. You must use those washers on the 5.0. All the best,-Chuck----------- One more thing a 600 cfm carb is way more than adequate for a 5.0. Don't fall into the thinking that bigger is always better.
There are to many engine combinations out there. You need to sit down with a engine builder, explain what you want to do. And check your options. Because what works for me might not work for you.
