Default Help!!! Oil In Engine Coolant!!!

Oil is leaking into my engine coolant pretty bad. I was told that it could be a cracked gasket, but there are no traces of oil leaks left on the ground. My mechanic said theres a good chance that the oil cooling system has a crack or something and it is pumping oil into the coolant. Anyone know where to start investigating this problem? Any help or suggestions are appreciated.

Obviously there's a breach between a coolant passage and an oil galley and you wouldn't have a leak that's visible. You might have to do a tear down to find it.

Most likely its a blown head gasket

you need to do a couple thing's to test before tear down.first is warm the engine on all of these test.pressure test coolant system you can get a tester from auto zone. take the rad cap off and install tester pump up to about 14-15psi.leave alone for 30min and see if the pressure goes down. if you have a leak inside the pressure will drop.you can do comp test bye removing all spark plugs install the tester disable the ign crank the motor 4-5times write down the press and go on to the next cylinder.after your done the pressures should be within 10-15% each other.the last test is a cylinder leak down test.you need a air compressure and the tester you pump the cylinder up and look for air bubbles in the coolant can take a couple mins to see bubbles.more then likely it's a head gasket.

Another place to check is the oil cooler. I presume that you have the Modular engine with the coolant circulating through the oil cooler. I have run across this leaking with the police cruisers (Crown Vics) and it was oil in the coolant because of the higher oil pressure vs. the pressure in the cooling sys. I would make sure to check this out before tearing into the engine.----Chuck

I have seen many oil coolers rupture. The oil is at higher pressure than coolant, thus the oil goes into the coolant. You wont have any visable leaks

I had that same problem with my old talon. It ended up being a head gasket. I would check compression and do a leakdown test.

Default Oil cooler

My vote's with the oil cooler being the culprit. If it were a gasket, you'd have oil in your coolant - but also coolant in your oil (probably - there are always exceptions).

If the oil cooler checks out OK, the pressure tests 830 hp mentioned are the next step(s).

Best of luck. I hope its just the oil cooler.

To rebuild the oil cooler. It is located between the block and the oil filter. There are actually 4 o-rings. Two that you can get from Ford. They are large and seal the oil and coolant housing to the engine block. The other two go on the shaft that connects the oil cooler to the block. One goes mid-shaft the other fits next to coupling on the shaft. If you only replace the one midshaft you will end up with a radiator full of oil. Scary and not so fun to fix. I just bought five or six o-rings from the local parts store and put them on till I got the right fit. Ford does not sell them. Ford will only sell the shaft $76 dollars. Note: I found if you put a short length of speaker wire(plastic coated) inside the o-rings it makes them a lot easier to get on the shaft. You can stretch them and they won't get caught in the threads. The amazing thing to me was you only need a pair of pliers( for removing hose couplings) a half inch allen wrench and a filter wrench. On a side note to anyone who tries this ,if you have an after market radiator, you absolutely must disconnect the hose that runs down to the water pump and fill it with coolant. If you do not the water pump will not prime and you will overheat the engine. Another lesson learned the hard way.
