I WISH it were that easy.

There are certain very specific things that should be done to get a proper reading.

First, new spark plugs.

Second, make a full throttle run and then shut down the motor. No idle. No NOTHING!

Even then taking a plug reading is circumspect and requires an intimate knowledge of the setup you are running.

There are much better ways, albeit more expensive, to determine whether you are running rich or lean.

Reading plugs in a street driven automobile is just not a practical way to get the necessary info for a proper tune.

Here's a handy tidbit I just found out the hard way. If you have a tune installed on your car and live in an area where an emissions and OBD scan are required for inspection, make sure your downstream O2 sensors and EGR switch are turned on. If they are not, you may have unset readiness codes in the ECU. A car 2000 and newer car is allowed to have 1 unset readiness code and still pass. 1996-1999 models are allowed 2 to pass.

Some folks might not be familiar with the EEC-Tuner. They are mutch more affordable than the more well know tuners and the learning curve is a bit steep, but it does everything the others do.

Nice writeup and keep the info coming.

I've got one here that's going in with the Super and can't wait to use it!:thumbsup

Wink Chip

I just had a new chip replace in my Mustang GT. I had to send the car to the Ford dealer so they could download there program. I thought maybe after Ford doing there program that, that would find the VerTech Supercharge . But it didnt. So i did some calling around to speed shops and most of them have told me they would need the hole car. Well the last call i made they told me they can do a program for the VerTech Supercharge. But i had to do alot of checking for numbers off the car...like computer chip.....supercharge and other part numbers. I was told that most speed shops wants the car so it can run up some big money....and being a Mustang person parts can add up real fast as far as the money goes. The speed shop did a program up to run the supercharge (X Calibrator2) SCT. It ran me $500.00 dollares. This was great because u can go to there site to do any updates that are needed. My Mustang is running great. Got more horsepower that i know what to do with. Still got alot to learn about the Supercharge.

Smile EEC Tuning

I am new to the EEC tuning and plan on upgrading my 89 5.0 with new throttle body, injectors and MAF. What tools do I need to tune my EEC to take full advantage of these upgrades?
