Difference between CAI and factory air filter? Howdy,
I have a fox-body 5.0 and I've been trying to figure out what the advantage would be having a Cold Air Induction kit vs. the factory induction system. Especially if a K&N air filter was installed in the factory air filter box.
The factory air box takes air from the inside of the fender...supposedly the same place the aftermarket CAI units get its air from.
The factory air box intake tube is roughly 3.5" (88mm) in diameter which is approximately 50% larger than the factory 60mm MAF/Throttle Body setup. 3.5" equates to about 88mm so even if an aftermarket throttle body and MAF were installed, there would theoretically still be enough volume with the factory setup.
What am I missing here? Is the CAI thing all hype? Has anyone installed nothing but a CAI system on a stock car and actually noticed a difference in the seat of the pants? Has anyone installed a top end (TB, MAF, iintake, heads, cam) and a new exhaust on their motor and then subsequently installed a CAI kit and noticed a difference?
I just don't see the advantage and if it is hype, would like to see our members spending their hard-earned money in more important places. If it is a real gain, then I'll be the next one online ordering a kit.
Thanks for you time.
