Default Head-ache (ha!) 351 and 302

Hey guys,

I've heard in the past that a 351w was nothing but a 302 block with tall heads (which I now know is CRAP). But I've heard several very knowledgeable sources insist on a connection that exists between the 351w and the 302. Is it true that heads from 302 manufacturers such as brodix or canfield can be used on a 351 block (i.e. is the bore same, and can the extensive aftermarket for the 5.0 or 302 be utilized with a 351, since the larger block begs to be stroked out?)

Also, does anyone know of a dual plane intake as was used on the old cobras that can be used with SFI and throttle bodies--I want the classic look for the 351w I'm building with all the possibilities of fuel injection.

One last thing, I promise-- weiand makes a screw-type supercharger for the 350 that replaces both the upper and lower intake, does anyone kknow of a company that makes the screw type supercharger for our good buddy the 351 (without utilizing an s351 lower intake or similar component?)

Thanks again, guys; I really appreciate your help!

The 351W is the same design/familiy as a 221-302, 5.0. It can use the same heads, cam, timing chain, timing cover, water pump and trans.

The main difference is the block. The 351 block is taller, not the heads. Plus you can not use a 302 oil pan on a 351W. The rear seal area is larger on the 351W.

I believe Weiand has a supercharger for the 351W, Or B&M.

There are single plane manifolds modified for injection use. Coast High Performance (CHP, Probe) has one. Plus there are a few places that have the parts to convert a manifold to injection.

You might want to look into Kenne Bell, they have twin screw 'Whipple chargers' for the 5.8L trucks, I am sure they can mod it to fit the 5.8 stang.

The heads are the same however the head bolts are not.The 351 uses a 1/2 headbolt and the 302 uses a 7/16 so in order to actually use a 302 head you have to have the headbolt holes drilled out to accept the larger headbolt.

Anyone know a producer of DOHC heads for a 351W (4,5, or 6 valves per cylinder).

Also, will an old dual plane 4-barrel manifold plumbed up for SFI flow better (and will the price be cheaper) than the classic upper and lower manifold-style of the 5.0s?
