Default Gear question.

When installing gears, what makes the gears become noisy?? Becuase i have heard that if you don't install them right they can be very noisy. Thanks

I think a lot of what makes gears noisy is the gap or diff between the teeth on the ring and the pinion...and that is affected by not setting the pinion depth properly and probably by the quality of the gear itself. There are shims that are used as well as specialized tools for gauging pinion depth, from Im told. I dunno...I could be wrong...hopefully I wont get beat up over this post. LOL

that is a good part of it.. my gears are a little noisy because my wear pattern is a bit too far to the outside of the ring gear.

as long as the backlash is correct, and the wear pattern looks good, there shouldn't be much of a problem.

i have some links to some gear writeups on my website.

http://paradox.shacknet.nu

they're either under links, or tools or something.

I also heard that if gears are made from a softer metal, that can make them noisy too ???

Ford gears are good street gears. I would also go with Richmond or Liberty gears for street/strip. Again IMO.

I have installed alot of gear sets over the years and never had any Ford, Richmond, Liberty, etc. gear whine. It's all in seting up the tolerance for each gear set per intended use. As a buyer one should notice gear companys that offer racing gears also carry a street gear product line.
