You have to take off the cam sproket..which the timing chain is normalattached to. So yes you would have to remove the chain in order to change your cam. I would suggest getting a Chilton or a Haynes manual if you're going to attempt this yourself. To align your cam and pistons, you have to set the crank to top dead center, then use a degree wheel to align the cam.
