Default 460 bigblock ..turns over hard..wires get hot

I have a 91 mustang convertible , with a bigblock 460. I have rebuilt port and polished heads (cast iron) ,hydraulic lift cam, bored 30 over.
I'm not sure what is in the bottom end b/c i bought the car half done with a blown headgasket....
Ive re-wired the whole ignition system from the battery on.....the car struggles to start with a 800 ca battery (starters new but factory) and the wires get pretty hot, and the car starts one time and then wont restart unless i let it set for a couple of hours. Has trouble turning over. I dont think it is the compression ratio due to the fact it only has a mild hydraulic cam. Does anyone have any suggestions? please help I have all this motor and cant go play thanx in advance.jody

First id make sure your timing isnt to advanced.

Then Id check and make sure your wires to the battery are High voltage.. Get the thick ones from autozone .. A week cable could cause that..

Last, make sure the ground is in a good location.. ..

good luck.

Default 460 turns over hard

Is the trans a small block application? I locked my 460 down hard when installed because the pilot shaft was too long and jammed into the bottom of the pilot bearing bore. Some people grind the pilot shaft off, but I just used hard shims between the trans ears and bell. been running 20 years like that in my F100.

If the exhaust runs too close to the starter you'll have the hot start problems you're talking about. I'm not saying this is a cure all, but it's something that may need attention. There are thermal boundry blankets that can be wraped around the starter or you can make a heat shield out of some aluminum plate between the exh. and starter.

As mentioned, with a trunk mounted battery you should have some good sized cables running back there, no smaller than 2 gauge for that big block. I'm using 1/0 on my car. You also need to run a ground cable from the battery (Negative) up to the engine block. You will get best results running both the pos. and neg. cables side by side up to the front. You don't want to use those battery terminals that attach to the cables with a couple of 1/4 in bolts and a little flat plate, you'll be defeating your purpose. Those things are made for a temporary fix in an emergency. If the wires are getting hot, there is something with high resistance in the circuit, if current doesn't flow it will cause heat and the more heat the more resistance to current flow, it's a vicious circle. Think of current flow like water flowing through a pipe, the larger the pipe the more water that can flow through it. I wish you luck with this problem. ---Chuck
